Source: The Royal Kennel Club’s dog-years-to-human-years guidance, as published via Purina UK. These are the same whole-year figures as the [calculator](https://dogyears.info/). They are estimates. Individual dogs vary, and this is not a substitute for veterinary advice.

## There is no single percentage for dogs who reach 15

People ask what percentage of dogs live to 15. A figure for “dogs” would mix a small companion breed with an Irish Wolfhound, and those are not the same outcome. This site does not print a blended percentage we cannot stand behind.

What the chart can say is the human-year equivalent if a dog does reach 15: about 76 for a small dog, 83 for a medium dog, 93 for a large dog and 114 for a giant dog. Reaching 15 is a late age in every band, and an exceptional one for a giant dog. For how lifespan differs by size, use [small versus large breed ageing](https://dogyears.info/small-vs-large-breed-ageing). Breed pages cite a Dogs Trust median where we have one. That median is for the named breed, not for dogs in general.

## Comfort, appetite, and when to call the vet

At 15 the useful notes are appetite, drinking, toileting, pain, and whether the dog still seeks you out. A dog who eats, walks to the garden and sleeps easily is having a different fifteenth year from a dog who is withdrawn and sore. You do not need a scoring system this site has not published. You need a vet who knows the dog, and a note you would trust a week later: how much of the bowl was left, how the stairs went, whether the night was restless.

Layout matters more than a new toy. Non-slip floors, a bed in the room you actually sit in, and water within easy reach are the adjustments in the [caring guide](https://dogyears.info/caring-for-an-ageing-dog-uk-guide). Raised bowls help some stiff necks and bother others. Try it rather than assuming it.

Call the vet for the prompt list on [when to take your senior dog to the vet](https://dogyears.info/when-to-take-senior-dog-to-vet): sudden lameness, a fast-growing lump, confusion that is new, straining, rapid weight loss, vomiting or diarrhoea that lasts, or breathing that is hard at rest. At 15, waiting for the next routine check is a long wait. The gradual version of those changes is described on [signs your dog is a senior](https://dogyears.info/signs-your-dog-is-a-senior).

## A small dog and a giant dog are not sharing this year

A small dog at 15 can still be steady, grey, and keen on a short walk. Their chart figure is about 76 human years. A giant dog at 15 is about 114 human years. Plan the week for the dog you have, including rest days that are chosen rather than collapsed into.

Parasite cover still belongs in the week if your vet has them on a product. Less walking does not mean no fleas. The [flea, tick and worm guide](https://dogyears.info/flea-tick-worm-treatment-for-dogs) says age does not reduce that risk. If swallowing a tablet has become hard, that is a question about the form of the product, not a reason to stop mentioning it. Insurance, if you are hoping to buy a first policy at 15, is often limited or unavailable for illness. [The insurance guide](https://dogyears.info/pet-insurance-for-older-dogs) treats “keep the policy you have” as a separate decision from shopping for a new one.

## Common questions

### How old is 15 in dog years?

About 76 human years if small, 83 if medium, 93 if large and 114 if giant.

### What percentage of dogs live to 15?

There is no single percentage that is fair to every size. Small dogs and giant dogs do not have the same chance of seeing 15, and this site does not invent a blended figure.

### Is a 15 year old dog a senior?

Yes, in every size band we use. Small dogs are senior from 10, medium dogs from 7, and large and giant dogs from 5. Fifteen is well past each of those thresholds.

### Need months, or a named breed?

The chart is whole years. The calculator uses the same guidance and will interpolate a birthday or look up a Royal Kennel Club breed.
