# 16 in Dog Years in Human Years

16 in dog years is about 80–121 human years depending on size.

| Size | Adult weight | Human years |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Small | Under 9 kg | 80 |
| Medium | 9–23 kg | 87 |
| Large | 23–41 kg | 99 |
| Giant | Over 41 kg | 121 |

Source: The Royal Kennel Club’s dog-years-to-human-years guidance, as published via Purina UK. These are the same whole-year figures as the [calculator](https://dogyears.info/). They are estimates. Individual dogs vary, and this is not a substitute for veterinary advice.

## 16 is the last year on the published chart

Sixteen is the oldest whole year in The Royal Kennel Club table this calculator uses. A 16-year-old dog is about 80 human years if small, 87 if medium, 99 if large and 121 if giant. The ×7 shortcut would say 112 for every dog, which is close only to the giant figure and a long way from the small one.

If your dog is older than 16, the published chart does not add a new researched row. The calculator carries on with the same yearly step it uses past the table: 4 more human years per dog year for a small dog, 4.5 for a medium dog, 5.5 for a large dog and 7 for a giant dog. That is an extension of the pattern, not a separate study of 17- and 18-year-old dogs. Say so if you quote it. The [homepage chart](https://dogyears.info/#age-chart) stops at 16 for that reason.

## Comfort at the far end of the chart

Sixteen is exceptional for a large or giant dog and a great age for a small or medium one. The job is comfort and honest watching. Can they get up without panic on the floor? Can they reach water? Are they eating enough to hold a weight your vet is content with? Do they still greet you?

Pain, nausea and confusion change those answers, and they are vet questions. Keep [when to take your senior dog to the vet](https://dogyears.info/when-to-take-senior-dog-to-vet) to hand, including the emergency signs, which do not get less urgent because the dog is old. The gradual changes — sleeping more, a duller coat, cloudier eyes — are described on [signs your dog is a senior](https://dogyears.info/signs-your-dog-is-a-senior), so you can tell them apart from a change that arrived this week.

The [caring guide](https://dogyears.info/caring-for-an-ageing-dog-uk-guide)’s home changes still help when walks are down to the garden: a rug, a low bed, a ramp, and company in the room you actually use.

## Do not quietly stop flea, worm or insurance cover

A 16-year-old still needs the flea, tick and worm plan your vet set, unless that vet has told you to stop. Ageing does not switch the risk off, and an infestation is harder to see on a dog who already moves less and grooms less. That is the point of the [flea, tick and worm guide](https://dogyears.info/flea-tick-worm-treatment-for-dogs), and it matters more here than it did at two, because there is less spare health to absorb a problem. If a tablet is a struggle, ask about another form. Do not cut the dose to make it easier.

A new illness policy at 16 is often not available. Keeping an existing policy in force is the question [pet insurance for older dogs](https://dogyears.info/pet-insurance-for-older-dogs) treats as separate from shopping around. Read the renewal, including any age-related excess, before you cancel it to save the premium.

About 80 human years for a small dog, 87 for a medium dog, 99 for a large dog and 121 for a giant dog.
