# Dog Life Stages Explained: Puppy to Senior

Dogs move through distinct life stages, each with different needs — but exactly when each stage begins depends heavily on your dog's adult size.

## Puppy (birth to around 1 year)

This is the fastest period of physical development in a dog's life. By the end of their first year, most dogs have reached close to their adult height, though larger breeds may still be filling out in weight and muscle. In human-years terms, a one-year-old dog is already roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old person — a huge amount of physical and behavioural development compressed into twelve months.

## Adolescent (roughly 1–2 years)

Often the most challenging stage for owners — physically near-adult, but behaviourally still maturing. Training and boundary-setting during this stage pays off for the rest of your dog's life. By the end of year two, most dogs have reached the human equivalent of their mid-twenties.

## Adult (2 years to the start of "senior")

This is the longest life stage, and its length varies enormously by size. A Chihuahua might stay in "adult" territory for eight or nine years; a Great Dane might only get two or three before crossing into the senior category. During adulthood, ageing continues but at a steadier, more gradual pace than the rapid early years.

## Senior (size-dependent — see table below)

This is where size matters most. Based on The Royal Kennel Club's guidance, here's roughly when each size band is generally considered to enter its senior years:

| Size band | Senior from (dog years) |
| --- | --- |
| Small (e.g. Jack Russell Terrier, Pug) | 10 |
| Medium (e.g. Border Collie, Standard Dachshund) | 7 |
| Large (e.g. Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd) | 5 |
| Giant (e.g. Great Dane, St. Bernard) | 5 |

Reaching "senior" status doesn't mean anything dramatic happens overnight — it's a gradual guideline for when to start paying closer attention to mobility, weight, and general health, and when many vets recommend moving to twice-yearly check-ups instead of annual ones. ## Why the gap between small and large breeds is so big

Larger dogs grow faster as puppies (reaching a much bigger adult size in the same first year or two), and this accelerated growth appears to be linked to faster cellular ageing and a shorter overall lifespan. It's the opposite of what many people expect intuitively — bigger isn't "younger for longer."
