# Jug Life Expectancy and Age Calculator

Not an RKC breed Small chart Senior from 10 if under 9 kg No UK median

A Jack Russell Terrier crossed with a Pug. Not a Royal Kennel Club breed. The 2024 UK study has parent medians, and no Jug median.

## How long do Jugs live?

This site does not publish a breed-specific UK median lifespan for the Jug. There is no median for this cross in the UK veterinary study this site uses. [McMillan and colleagues, Scientific Reports (1 February 2024)](https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-023-50458-w), give medians for 155 recognised breeds and one pooled crossbred group. Supplementary Table 3 has a single row labelled Crossbreed. That row is every crossbred dog in the analysis together, not this cross on its own. Their median survival was 12.0 years (95% confidence interval 12.0 to 12.1; 111,053 dogs). The paper also says 95% of that crossbred group were dead by 18.2 years.

Among purebreds in the same study, large dogs had a shorter median (11.9 years) than small dogs (12.7). The authors describe body size as the strongest predictor of lifespan in dogs. They do not publish that size split for named crosses. A crossbreed's lifespan still tends to follow size, which is why the calculator below asks for adult weight rather than a breed name.

There is no Jug median in the 2024 UK study. The pooled crossbred median was 12.0 years, for all crosses together. Supplementary Table 3 gives 13.3 years for the Jack Russell Terrier and 11.6 years for the Pug. A Jug is not automatically 12-and-a-bit years because those two figures sit either side of 12. The parent pages are [Jack Russell Terrier](https://dogyears.info/jack-russell-terrier-dog-years) and [Pug](https://dogyears.info/pug-dog-years).

The Royal Kennel Club [Pug standard](https://www.royalkennelclub.com/breed-standards/toy/pug/) gives an ideal weight of 6.3–8.1 kg. The [Jack Russell Terrier standard](https://www.royalkennelclub.com/breed-standards/terrier/jack-russell-terrier/) gives a height of 25–30 cm and says substance and weight should be in proportion to that height.

## Jug age in human years (small band)

| Dog years | Human years | Life stage |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | 15 | Adolescent |
| 2 | 24 | Adult |
| 3 | 28 | Adult |
| 6 | 40 | Adult |
| 7 | 44 | Adult |
| 10 | 56 | Senior begins |
| 13 | 68 | Senior |
| 15 | 76 | Geriatric |

This table is the small band, for an adult Jug under 9 kg. Figures are The Royal Kennel Club's published small-breed guidance, as tabulated by Purina UK. They are the same numbers as the widget when small is selected. Want months as well? Use a decimal age in the widget (for example 10.5).

## Which size setting to use

6.3–8.1 kg is under 9 kg, so small is the default. A heavier adult belongs on medium. The Jack Russell page on this site also uses the small table. That is the breed classification, not a measured weight for every Jug.

- **Small, under 9 kg.** Senior from about 10 dog years (about 56 human years). [Open the calculator on small, age 10](https://dogyears.info/?s=small&a=10).
- **Medium, 9–23 kg.** Senior from about 7 dog years (about 47 human years). [Open the calculator on medium, age 7](https://dogyears.info/?s=medium&a=7).
- **Large, 23–41 kg.** Senior from about 5 dog years (about 36 human years). [Open the calculator on large, age 5](https://dogyears.info/?s=large&a=5).
- **Giant, over 41 kg.** Use the giant setting on the [main calculator](https://dogyears.info/?s=giant&a=5).

Those kilogram cuts are this site's size categories, not a weight the Royal Kennel Club publishes for Jugs. A breed page for a parent can use a different band, because recognised breeds are classified by the Club's size groups rather than by your dog's scales.

## Worked examples using this site's calculator

These are the same Royal Kennel Club small-breed figures the homepage uses. The classic ×7 rule is only a comparison. More on that in [Is the ×7 rule real?](https://dogyears.info/dog-years-x7-rule-explained)

| Your Jug | RKC human years | ×7 rule | What that stage usually means |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 3 years | 28 | 21 | Adult — ×7 understates the early years |
| 7 years | 44 | 49 | Still adult on the small-breed table |
| 10 years | 56 | 70 | Senior begins on the small-breed table |
| 13 years | 68 | 91 | Converting the years you have, not a forecast |

## When is a Jug considered a senior?

A Jug under 9 kg is senior from about 10 dog years on this site, about 56 human years. The Pug breed standard's ideal weight, 6.3–8.1 kg, is inside that band, so the chart uses small. If the adult dog is 9 kg or over, use medium and treat senior as starting at about 7. Flat-faced dogs can show breathing effort earlier than the senior line. That is a vet question, not an age conversion.

Gradual change is common. Sudden lameness, rapid weight loss, or a new lump is the point to read [when to take your senior dog to the vet](https://dogyears.info/when-to-take-senior-dog-to-vet) rather than wait for the next routine slot. The signs to watch are on [signs your dog is a senior](https://dogyears.info/signs-your-dog-is-a-senior).

Insurers do not have to use the same senior line. Read [pet insurance for older dogs](https://dogyears.info/pet-insurance-for-older-dogs) if you are weighing cover. The two clocks do not have to match.

## Health

[Dogs Trust](https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/dog-advice/health-wellbeing/at-home/brachycephalic-dogs) lists the Pug among flat-faced breeds. It says brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) comes from that skull shape and can cause noisy breathing, more effort to breathe, less stamina, a higher heatstroke risk, and sometimes regurgitation. It also says crossbreeds with a shortened nose can be affected, and that many flat-faced dogs are not. The Royal Kennel Club [Pug standard](https://www.royalkennelclub.com/breed-standards/toy/pug/) says pinched nostrils and a heavy nose wrinkle are unacceptable. Neither source gives a Jug percentage.
