The Chinese Crested is classified by The Royal Kennel Club within the smaller ageing band, typically weighing 2.3โ€“5.4 kg as an adult, with a median life expectancy of around 13.4 years, according to a 2024 analysis of UK veterinary records by Dogs Trust. Instantly recognisable for its striking looks, the breed comes in two coat varieties from the same litter: the largely hairless type with soft tufts on the head, tail, and feet, and the fully-coated "Powderpuff."

What this means for your Chinese Crested

The hairless variety commonly has fewer teeth than usual and is more prone to dental crowding, so regular dental checks matter throughout life. Exposed skin also means a higher risk of sunburn and dryness, making sunscreen and moisturiser useful additions to a grooming routine. Patellar luxation (a slipping kneecap) is also seen in the breed.

Both coat varieties benefit from gentle skin and coat care, with the hairless type needing extra protection from sun and cold given the lack of fur insulation.

When is a Chinese Crested considered a senior?

Under The Royal Kennel Club's size-adjusted guidance, small breeds like the Chinese Crested are generally considered senior from around 10 dog years old.
