Privacy Policy
Effective date: 7 July 2026
This policy explains how dogyears.info ("we", "us", "this site") handles information when you visit. We've tried to write it in plain English rather than dense legal language. This policy isn't a substitute for professional legal advice — if you're relying on it for your own compliance purposes, please have it reviewed by a qualified solicitor.
Who we are
Dog Years is an independent, UK-run website. You can reach us via our contact page or by emailing hello@dogyears.info.
What information we collect
We don't ask you to create an account, and the calculator itself runs entirely in your browser — the dog age you enter is never sent to our servers. We do, however, use the following:
- Standard server/technical logs: basic technical information (such as IP address, browser type, and pages visited) that any website host collects automatically.
- Functional storage: if you switch it on, remembers your dog's name, age or date of birth, and breed/size on your own device, described below.
- Analytics cookies: to understand how visitors use the site, so we can improve it.
- Advertising cookies: used by Google and its advertising partners, described below.
Remembering your dog's details (functional storage)
The calculator can optionally remember your dog's name, age or date of birth, and breed or size, so they're pre-filled the next time you visit. This is switched off by default — it only activates if you choose "Accept all" on the cookie banner, or turn on "Functional" in Cookie Settings (found in the footer of every page).
This information is stored using your browser's local storage, a mechanism similar to a cookie. It stays on your own device and is never sent to us, to advertisers, or to any other third party. You can clear it at any time by clicking "Forget my saved dog details" on the calculator, by switching Functional off in Cookie Settings, or by clearing your browser's site data for dogyears.info.
Cookies and advertising
This site may show adverts served by Google AdSense and similar advertising networks. As required by Google's publisher policies, we disclose the following:
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve adverts based on a user's prior visits to this website or other websites.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to our users based on their visit to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
- You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, or opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalised advertising by visiting aboutads.info/choices.
Where required, we'll ask for your consent to non-essential cookies via a cookie banner before they're set. You can change your cookie preferences at any time by clearing your browser's cookies for this site and revisiting.
Affiliate links
Some pages on this site — particularly guidance around senior dog care — contain affiliate links, for example to pet insurance comparison services or vet telehealth providers. If you click one of these links and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This never affects the information or recommendations we provide; affiliate relationships don't influence our breed data or ageing calculations, which are sourced independently from The Royal Kennel Club.
Third-party links
This site links out to third-party websites (for example, affiliate partners or The Royal Kennel Club). We're not responsible for the privacy practices or content of external sites — please check their own privacy policies.
Your data protection rights
Under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, you have rights over any personal data held about you, including the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Request correction of inaccurate data
- Request deletion of your data
- Object to or restrict certain processing
- Request data portability
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@dogyears.info. If you're unhappy with how we've handled a request, you also have the right to complain to the UK's data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
Children's privacy
This site is not directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 13.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time, for example if our advertising or affiliate partners change. The "effective date" above will always reflect the latest version.
