The French Bulldog is classified by The Royal Kennel Club within the smaller ageing band, which generally means a slower rate of ageing in later life compared with large breeds. Their median life expectancy is around 9.8 years, according to a 2024 analysis of UK veterinary records by Dogs Trust โ notably shorter than most small breeds. However, "Frenchies" are a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed, and their health profile doesn't always follow the typical small-breed pattern โ more on that below.
What this means for your French Bulldog
Unlike many small breeds that tend to live long, healthy lives well into double figures, French Bulldogs carry breed-specific health risks tied to their flat-faced anatomy: breathing difficulties (brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome), overheating in warm weather, skin fold infections, and spinal issues are all more common in the breed. This means "ageing well" for a Frenchie is often more about proactive health management than it is for many other small breeds.
Weight management matters enormously here too โ excess weight makes breathing problems significantly worse. Regular vet check-ups from a younger age than you might expect are genuinely worthwhile for this breed.
When is a French Bulldog considered a senior?
Using The Royal Kennel Club's size-adjusted guidance, small breeds are generally considered senior from around 10 dog years old. Given the breed's known health considerations, though, many vets recommend starting more frequent check-ups for French Bulldogs somewhat earlier than this general guideline suggests.
