The Pomeranian is classified by The Royal Kennel Club within the smaller ageing band, typically weighing 1.9–3.5 kg as an adult, with a median life expectancy of around 12.2 years, according to a 2024 analysis of UK veterinary records by Dogs Trust. Descended from larger Arctic sledding breeds and named after the Pomerania region, today's Pomeranian is a tiny companion dog with a famously fluffy double coat and a bold, confident personality.

What this means for your Pomeranian

Pomeranians are alert and often act much bigger than their size suggests, which can make early training and socialisation important to prevent small-dog behavioural issues later in life.
