When a 10-year-old dog counts as senior
On the size bands this site uses, from The Royal Kennel Club, a 10-year-old dog is a senior in every band. The bands did not arrive there together. Small dogs (under 9 kg) are generally treated as senior from 10, so this birthday is the first year that label applies. Medium dogs (9–23 kg) have been senior since 7. Large dogs (23–41 kg) and giant dogs (over 41 kg) have been senior since 5. It is a care guideline, not a switch that flips overnight.
The life stages guide sets those thresholds out in one table. Signs your dog is a senior is the page for what the change looks like at home: greying, stiffness after rest, shorter walks, and the difference between a gradual shift and a sudden one.
The first senior year, if your dog is small
For a small dog, 10 is often the point to move from a once-a-year vet visit to the twice-yearly checks many UK practices recommend once a dog is senior. Medium, large and giant dogs should already be on that rhythm if you followed the size threshold rather than waiting for a round number. The visit is for gradual things: stiffness that eases once they are moving, weight creeping up as walks get shorter, teeth, and thirst or appetite that has shifted over weeks.
Sudden lameness, a new lump, or confusion that appears quickly are reasons to go sooner, not to save it for the next slot. When to take your senior dog to the vet separates the routine list from the prompt list and the emergency list.
Keep the usual exercise if the dog still wants it. The caring guide puts it as shorter and more frequent, not as stopping. A dog who is stiff for the first few minutes and then moves freely is a different picture from a dog who will not bear weight.
Insurance and parasite cover at 10
Ten is a sensible moment to read the insurance paperwork again. Insurers do not use the Kennel Club senior ages. Some will not start a new policy for a 10-year-old dog, and will still renew one that began earlier. A condition diagnosed before you take out cover is usually excluded afterwards. If you already have a policy, the useful question is whether the excess changes with age. Pet insurance for older dogs goes through that in UK terms. It is not a quote, and it does not name a single upper age, because providers set their own.
Flea, tick and worm treatment does not become optional at 10. Age does not reduce the risk, and an itch or a tick is easier to miss if the dog is already slowing down. The flea, tick and worm guide explains why senior dogs still need a schedule, including through a UK winter, when central heating keeps indoor fleas going.
Common questions
How old is a 10 year old dog in human years?
A 10-year-old dog is about 56 human years if small, 60 if medium, 66 if large and 79 if giant, using The Royal Kennel Club’s size-adjusted guidance. The old ×7 rule would say 70 for every dog, which hides that size difference.
Is a 10 year old dog a senior?
Yes, on this site’s Royal Kennel Club size bands. Small dogs are generally counted as senior from 10. Medium dogs from 7, and large and giant dogs from 5, so a 10-year-old in those bands has already been senior for several years.
Can you insure a 10 year old dog in the UK?
Sometimes. It depends on the insurer, and on whether you are starting a new policy or renewing one you already have. There is no single UK age limit. Read the new-business rules, and see our pet insurance guide for older dogs before you compare prices.
