Why 12 is not one kind of old
Twelve dog years is about 64 human years for a small dog, 69 for a medium dog, 77 for a large dog and 93 for a giant dog. Sixty-odd is a senior adult. Ninety-odd is a great age. Calling every 12-year-old dog “very old” flattens the difference The Royal Kennel Club’s size guidance is there to show.
Small versus large breed ageing is the longer explanation: larger dogs do a lot of growing in the same first two years, and that faster early pace lines up with a faster later one. The chart is the year-by-year version of that idea.
Walks and the morning after
Match the walk to the dog in front of you. A small dog at 12 may still do the normal route. A large or giant dog at 12 may need it split. The caring guide suggests shorter and more frequent walks, and keeping some exercise rather than retiring the lead. Sniffing counts. A garden circuit counts on a bad-weather day.
Watch the next morning, not just the walk itself. Stiffness that eases after a few minutes is the pattern described as ordinary ageing on signs your dog is a senior. Stiffness that worsens, or a leg they will not use, should be seen rather than walked off. That distinction is the point of when to take your senior dog to the vet.
What is worth saying at a check-up
Bring a short note: weight this month against three months ago, how long walks last now, any cough at rest, any change in drinking. Twice-yearly checks are what our vet page passes on for senior dogs, and 12 is not an age to skip one because the dog seems fine. Teeth, joints and organs are why those visits exist. They often show up on examination before they show up on a walk.
Insurance, if you still have it, is worth a renewal read at the same time. Starting a first policy at 12 is a narrower conversation than keeping one. Pet insurance for older dogs separates those two, including the point that a condition which appears while you are covered can stay covered at renewal only if the policy does not lapse.
Common questions
What is 12 in dog years?
About 64 human years if the dog is small, 69 if medium, 77 if large and 93 if giant.
Is 12 old for a large dog?
On this chart a large dog at 12 is about 77 human years, and large dogs are treated as senior from 5, so 12 is well into that stage. A small dog at the same age is about 64 human years. Old for a large dog is not the same claim as old for every dog.
Should walks stop at 12?
Not by default. Keep regular, easier exercise if the dog still wants to go, and shorten it if recovery is poor. Stop and call the vet if they are lame or exhausted, rather than because the birthday says 12.
