Is 14 very old for a dog?
For a giant dog, yes in ordinary language: this chart puts 14 at about 107 human years. For a large dog it is about 88, which is old. For a medium dog it is about 78, and for a small dog about 72. “Very old” fits the top of that range much more tightly than the bottom.
All four sizes are senior. Large and giant dogs have been senior since 5, so 14 is nine years into that stage for them. A small dog, senior from 10, is four years into it. If you need the thresholds without the conversion, they are on the life stages page.
Should you walk a 14-year-old dog?
Walk them if they still want to go, and let the dog set a shorter distance. The aim is a little regular movement, not the route you did at four. The caring guide prefers two or three brief outings to one long one, and that advice is tighter at 14 than it was at eight. Sniffing a green is still a walk. So is the garden, on a day the street is too much.
Skip the walk and ring the vet if the dog is lame, breathing hard while resting, or sitting down on the way home and not getting up. Those are not “14-year-old things” to push through. When to take your senior dog to the vet has the emergency list if you are unsure which column a symptom belongs in. Gradual slowing is also covered on signs your dog is a senior, which is the right comparison when the change has been months, not a morning.
Comfort, and whether to insure
At 14, comfort is daily work: a dry bed, nails short enough to stand square, and food they will actually eat. Weight loss you did not plan, or weight gain on less food, is a vet conversation. So is a new lump, or a mouth that suddenly smells different.
If the question is whether to insure a 14-year-old dog for the first time, expect fewer options and read the exclusions before the price. Renewing a policy you already hold is a different question from starting one. Pet insurance for older dogs sets that out, and it does not quote a premium, because prices move and we will not invent one. Flea, tick and worm cover still sits alongside that paperwork: the flea guide says a senior dog on shorter walks is still exposed, especially to fleas in the house.
