The Barbet is classified by The Royal Kennel Club as a large breed, typically weighing 16โ€“28 kg as an adult. An ancient French water dog, thought to be an ancestor of several other water-retrieving breeds including the Poodle, the Barbet is affectionate, sociable, and has a strong natural love of water thanks to its dense, curly, waterproof coat.

What this means for your Barbet

The breed's thick, curly coat needs regular grooming to prevent matting, particularly around the ears and paws โ€” this becomes more important, not less, as dogs age and become less tolerant of long grooming sessions. Ear infections can also be more common given the coat covering the ear canal.

Hip dysplasia is seen in the breed, so watch for stiffness or reluctance to exercise as your Barbet gets older.

When is a Barbet considered a senior?

Under The Royal Kennel Club's size-adjusted guidance, large breeds like the Barbet are generally considered senior from around 5 dog years old.
