Toy Poodle age in human years
The Toy Poodle falls into the small-breed ageing band, so a 7-year-old Toy Poodle works out to roughly 44 human years โ slightly younger in human terms than a Standard or Miniature at the same dog age. For an exact figure for your own dog, whichever size, use the Dog Years calculator and select "Poodle" from the breed lookup, or search by name for the specific size variant.
The Poodle comes in three sizes recognised by The Royal Kennel Club: the Standard Poodle and Miniature Poodle (both classified in the medium ageing band) and the Toy Poodle (classified in the small ageing band). Across its size varieties, the Poodle has a median life expectancy of around 14 years, according to a 2024 analysis of UK veterinary records by Dogs Trust โ among the longer-lived breeds. Poodles are widely regarded as one of the most intelligent dog breeds, originally bred as water retrievers.
What this means for your Poodle
Poodles are highly trainable and mentally active, and tend to do best with plenty of mental stimulation throughout life, not just physical exercise. Their curly, non-shedding coat needs regular grooming to prevent matting, which becomes more important, not less, as an older dog may groom itself less thoroughly.
The breed is prone to hip dysplasia (particularly Standard-sized dogs), progressive retinal atrophy, epilepsy, and Addison's disease, a hormonal condition affecting the adrenal glands that's seen more often in Poodles than in most other breeds. Toy and Miniature Poodles are also prone to luxating patella, while deep-chested Standard Poodles carry some risk of bloat.
When is a Poodle considered a senior?
Under The Royal Kennel Club's size-adjusted guidance, Standard and Miniature Poodles (medium band) are generally considered senior from around 7 dog years old, while Toy Poodles (small band) reach the senior threshold slightly later, around 10 dog years old.
