The Basenji is classified by The Royal Kennel Club within the smaller ageing band, typically weighing 9–11 kg as an adult, with a median life expectancy of around 12.1 years, according to a 2024 analysis of UK veterinary records by Dogs Trust. An ancient African hunting breed from the Congo Basin, famous for being almost entirely barkless and instead communicating through a distinctive yodel-like sound, the Basenji is intelligent, independent, and notably fastidious about self-grooming, much like a cat.
