Both breeds are in the large size band, so under Royal Kennel Club guidance they age at exactly the same rate year-to-year. The main practical differences are things like expected lifespan and breed-specific health risks, not the ageing curve itself.

How this comparison works

The Royal Kennel Club's ageing guidance is size-based, not breed-based: every breed is assigned to one of four size bands (small, medium, large, giant), and all dogs within the same band age at the same rate. So two breeds in the same size band — a Labrador Retriever and a Golden Retriever, for example — follow an identical dog-years-to-human-years curve. The meaningful differences between same-band breeds are things like expected lifespan and typical health concerns, not the year-by-year conversion itself. Breeds in different size bands follow different curves — see the table above once you've picked two breeds.

Don't see the breed you're after? The calculator covers over 225 Royal Kennel Club-recognised breeds, and the guides hub has in-depth ageing charts for ten popular breeds.
